Make 2018 the Year of Peak Athletic Performance

Welcome to the season of overindulgence. Don’t worry; we’re not judging. But once the holidays are over, and the clock strikes midnight on the 31st, it’s resolution time. And whether you want six-pack abs, improved athletic performance, or to simply live pain free, the area of focus lies in your core.

There are two muscle groups responsible for core strength – postural and phasic. Your postural muscles are located between your pelvis and your abdomen, as well as the muscles that are attached to your spine. They are always active, even when sitting. They can become tight from overuse. And for them to operate as they should, they’re reliant on strong phasic muscles.

Phasic muscles include your abs and your glutes. Unlike your postural muscles, they are not always active, and they easily become weak from lack of use. And as they are responsible for much of your core strength, and initiating movement, they are extremely important for both athletic performance and a pain-free life.

How Chiropractic Care Affects Your Core Muscles

A routine chiropractic adjustment can help increase your range of motion, improve circulation, and reduce pain. An adjustment can also help restore balance and alignment to both the postural and phasic muscles.

Post adjustment, there are things you can do as well. To maintain that balance and alignment, concentrate on stretching the overworked postural muscles, while also strengthening the under-worked phasic muscles.

Postural strength and coordination are essential for injury prevention and sports performance. But what can chiropractic care do specifically to improve performance in the sports you love, and live, to play?

Chiropractic Treatment and Running

Whether you’re suffering from Achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, hip bursitis, or improper knee tracking, the solution might just be the same. When your spine and pelvis are out of alignment, it can cause unnecessary tension on one or more body parts. Eventually this misalignment will manifest itself in problems elsewhere, like those listed above.

A Canadian research team recently included Chiropractic care in the rehabilitation program of 16 injured female long distance runners. Not only did these runners recover more quickly, seven of them actually scored "personal best" performances while under chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Treatment and Golf

Did you know that chiropractic care can improve your golf swing and how far you hit the ball? Tiger Woods, perhaps the greatest golfer of all time, is a firm believer, saying, “Being a chiropractic patient has really helped me immensely.”

A recent survey involving 400 recreational golfers discovered that half routinely use chiropractic care to improve the alignment of their body, and as a result, the alignment of their golf swing. And nearly all of those who received chiropractic treatment reported positive results from the care they received.

Chiropractic Treatment and Tennis

Tennis is a game with a tremendous variety of movement, all of which, over time, can destabilize the body. The rapid deceleration often required when charging the net can result in problems in the lower extremities. And the serving motion, when swinging the racket over your head, excessively stretches and extends the shoulder muscles.

All of these movements can eventually cause an imbalance. And if you’ve been paying attention, a body out of balance is a body out of alignment, and one that most likely can benefit from a chiropractic adjustment.

Even grip strength can be improved with proper treatment. A group of athletes receiving chiropractic care significantly improved their grip strength compared to the group not receiving any chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Treatment and Crossfit

Crossfit is a combination of aerobics, calisthenics, and resistance exercises, and if done correctly and intensely, can help you get into the best shape of your life. However, it’s precisely this variety and intensity that also increases your risk of injury.

Good form is essential when performing crossfit exercises. And if your form is poor, even for a moment, this can cause an injury. Lower back problems are common, and as we all know by now, your chiropractor specializes in that area.

However, soft tissue therapy is also in a chiropractor’s toolkit. Those who take part in crossfit develop tightness in their joints and muscles more easily, which places undue stress on the musculoskeletal system. And soft tissue therapy helps to relieve that stress, which aids in faster recovery.

Even if you’re not concerned with being a competitive athlete, chiropractic care can help muscles and ligaments heal quicker, which means decreasing pain faster. And best of all, chiropractic treatment has shown a reduction in the chance of reinjury.

And who doesn’t want to resolve to feel better and pain free in the New Year?
